Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him at Bramall Lane until the summer of 2028.

Wilder returned to the club last September on a deal due to expire next year, but that agreement has now been lengthened.

The 58-year-old is currently serving his third stint as boss of the Blades and has taken charge of almost 450 matches across his time with the side.

“Chris is the right man to lead Sheffield United, and we couldn’t be happier that he’s committed his future to the club,” said co-chairman Steven Rosen.

“His energy, his honesty and his understanding of what this club means to its supporters have been clear to all of us.”

A lifelong Sheffield United fan and former player, Wilder was first named manager in 2016.

During nearly five years in his initial tenure, he guided the team to promotions from League One and the Championship, as well as their highest Premier League finish of ninth place.

He later had spells at Middlesbrough and Watford before rejoining the Blades in December 2023, replacing Paul Heckingbottom.

He could not stop their relegation from the Premier League that season and then finished third in the Championship, losing the play-off final to Sunderland and missing out on promotion.

Wilder departed after the Wembley defeat, though only for three months, and was reappointed following a difficult period under Spanish coach Ruben Selles.

The Blades ended the campaign 13th, their lowest league position in nine years, but Wilder is eager to improve significantly this season.

He said: “We’re working hard behind the scenes to get everything ready for the season ahead and we’ll be pushing hard to make this campaign – and future campaigns – successful for Sheffield United.”
