Robinson Draws on South Africa’s Weaknesses, Crafts Strategic Blueprint
Second Test, Gqeberha (day two of five)
South Africa 97-5: Bavuma 41*; Boland 4-31
Australia: Yet to bat
Scorecard
For much of Monday it seemed rain would spare any meaningful play during day two of the second Test in Gqeberha.
Nonetheless, the hosts’ top order revealed its fragility again, finishing the game at 97/5 and ceding dominance to Australia.
It took Australia’s metronome Scott Boland only seven deliveries to claim his second wicket, even amid the intermittent rain from the opening day.
Steady in length and line, the 37‑year‑old found the optimal distance to bring opener Marquis Ackerman forward.
Ackerman defended cautiously over 38 balls yet failed to consolidate, ultimately sliding past to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, adding to Boland’s tally of 4‑31 for the day.
Boland concluded his figures with 4/31, once more stressing South Africa’s persistent deficiency at the top of the order.
The inclusion of Ackerman, one of only two batting injuries from their first loss by red ball, highlighted the team’s reliance on experienced weaponry.
Matthew Breetzke entered as a fresh element following Tristan Stubbs’ shaky start; he produced four runs from 17 before giving up, batting weakly through Mitchell Starc’s bowlers.
Changes prompted by the losses saw Ryan Rickelton shift from number one to sixth, assuming the wicket‑keeper role.
Late on day two, Pat Cummins’ bouncer exploitation turned against Rickelton, who was grounded on the body and dropped at nine‑two runs while attempting a tentative push to cover with Starc.
Conversely, Matt Renshaw’s aggression in chasing saw a bright outcome earlier this afternoon, yet on a subsequent day his pace slipped, allowing a save from a first‑slip edge on the turf.
Ultimately, the contest reflects Australia’s command of the series, while South Africa’s fragile top order continues to pose an enduring challenge.
