Boston Scientific announced on Wednesday that a cyberattack identified the day before is interfering with its worldwide operations, affecting its capacity to process and ship customer orders.
The incident was recognized on Tuesday, August 25, and the firm activated its incident‑response plan, enlisting external cybersecurity specialists to evaluate and contain the threat. The overall extent of the breach, as well as its operational and financial ramifications, is still undetermined, and the company has not yet concluded whether it will have a material impact.
“Although the company is working diligently to restore affected functions and regain system access, the timeline for complete restoration remains uncertain,” the filing noted.
Boston Scientific shares slipped 5.8% in premarket trading on Wednesday.
The attack arrives at a challenging time for the Marlborough, Massachusetts‑based company. Its stock has already declined by nearly half this year, according to CNBC, amid investor concerns sparked by a weak profit outlook announced earlier in the year.
Earlier this month, Boston Scientific lowered its full‑year profit outlook after demand for its Watchman heart implant fell short of expectations. It revised its 2026 adjusted earnings‑per‑share forecast to $3.28‑$3.32, down from $3.34‑$3.41, and cut its organic sales growth target to 5%‑6% from 6.5%‑8%. The slowdown in the Watchman segment reflects a change in clinical practice, with physicians increasingly combining the device with other cardiac procedures in a single visit instead of performing dedicated Watchman cases.
Nevertheless, the company’s second‑quarter results exceeded expectations. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.86, surpassing the company’s guided range of $0.82‑$0.84, on net sales of $5.44 billion.
Boston Scientific’s board also approved a restructuring program earlier this summer that includes changes to sourcing and logistics, manufacturing relocations, and organizational adjustments, with a target completion date of late 2029, the company said.
