Derek Chisora’s loss to Deontay Wilder was widely anticipated to signal the end of his career, yet ‘Del Boy’ has not officially announced retirement. At 42, the British heavyweight remains poised for a potential world title bout, a prospect that could motivate him to stay active in the sport.
Originally planning to retire after his fiftieth fight against Wilder in April, Chisora instead faced a split‑decision defeat that left him eager for more. A rematch with the American fighter now appears to be a compelling reason for him to continue boxing.
Nonetheless, this is not the sole pathway that might delay Chisora’s retirement. A possible third attempt for the heavyweight championship — following earlier unsuccessful bids against Vitali Klitschko and Tyson Fury — could be on the horizon.
Following his first successful defence of the WBA heavyweight title against Peter Kadiru, Murat Gassiev indicated his interest in a potential bout with Chisora.
“If we can’t unify the belts in the near future, why not [fight Chisora]?
“Chisora and I have a good relationship. We’re friends. He’s a big name in boxing, and that fight would generate a lot of excitement.”
Gassiev stopped Germany’s Kadiru in six one‑sided rounds on Russian soil, yet the 32‑year‑old has also previously targeted a clash with the highly rated prospect Moses Itauma, who is scheduled to face Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic next month and is viewed as a likely opponent for Gassiev’s next fight.
