Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva identified China as a potential partner for the country’s critical minerals strategy, speaking three days before Sunday’s closely contested election.
In an interview with Flow, one of Brazil’s most-watched podcasts, on Thursday evening, Lula emphasized the need for Brazil to move beyond exporting raw ore. “We want to transform them here in Brazil,” he stated regarding the minerals.
When questioned about China’s role in these plans, Lula indicated the country could serve as a partner “bringing technology to us,” alongside the United States. He remarked, “[Donald] Trump has to know that he takes care of the United States. I take care of Brazil.”
Brazil holds the world’s second-largest rare earth reserves after China, and both Washington and Beijing are seeking supplies outside Chinese control.
