The inaugural Running of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) took place at 6 furlongs on Monmouth Park’s dirt in 2007. Since then, the race has been contested over 7 furlongs on the main track.

Two horses have previously captured back-to-back victories in the event: Groupie Doll (2012–2013) and Goodnight Olive (2022–2023). Favorites have prevailed in seven of 18 runnings, a 41% strike rate, with the biggest upset coming in 2017 when Bar of Gold returned 66-1.

Saturday, October 31st headlines the Filly & Mare Sprint as the eighth leg of day two at Keeneland. Post time is set for 3:42 p.m. ET, with live coverage on NBC and Peacock.

Pre-entries are scheduled for release on Wednesday, October 21, with the gate draw following on Monday, October 26.

Filly & Mare Sprint Preview: Top Contenders and Strategic Value

Ways and Means (Flavien Prat, Chad Brown)

Ways and Means (Flavien Prat, Chad Brown) captured the Bed o’ Roses Stakes (G2) earlier in the campaign, then followed up with a dominant 5½-length victory in the Ballerina Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in late August, a run that secured her a “Win and You’re In” entry. Trainer Chad Brown has sired three prior winners of this race, including two with Good Olive, and this five-year-old mare has consistently thrived with ample spacing between outings. She looks to build on a fifth-place finish in the 2024 edition at Del Mar.

At her peak, she profiles as the clearest speed and class advantage in the field, with the stable support to navigate any pacing scenario.

Key observation will be the early pace setup; her running style as a mid-pack stalker positions her well to settle behind a hot tempo and launch a late run.

Explora (TBA, Bob Baffert)

Explora arrives as a promising talent. She impressed in early August when she powered home by five lengths in the Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga following a distance reduction, having previously posted a respectable fourth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1). She had previously registered scores in the Santa Ynez Stakes and the Leslie’s Lady, both over 7 furlongs.

From a wagering perspective, she offers upside as a straight play if the conditions align, while also serving as a solid sub-play in exotics for those targeting a board finish.

Her connecting pattern suggests she’ll track the pace from mid-pack, with a strong closing kick capable of making significant ground when an early tempo unfolds.

Sweet Azteca (Juan Hernandez, Richard Baltas)

A veteran California-based performer, Sweet Azteca has compiled a four-race graded stakes winning streak, including victories in the Great Lady M Stakes (G2) and Rancho Bernardo (G3) earlier this year. Having been scratched from last year’s running of this contest, she remains a proven graded winner at the distance and has been working sharply at Santa Anita since August.

Her talent and recent figures suggest she could be undervalued in the morning line, particularly given the star-studded nature of the field, making her an attractive price for those seeking an upset margin.

Ideal positioning will be key; a clean break from an outside gate could allow her to settle in a trailing trail, conserving energy for a late stretch run.

Longshot to Watch: Evanescence

Evanescence presents an intriguing longer-odd proposition. She holds an unblemished record at Keeneland (3-for-3) and captured the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) on October 3 with a late rally that secured her a “Win and You’re In” ticket. Her running style, which profiles off the pace rather than true early speed, aligns well with Keeneland’s configuration, and her recent graded success suggests she can outrun her assigned mark.

A wager at 10-1 or greater represents significant value, particularly in exotic pools where her local edge and recent form can generate substantial returns.

The primary challenge lies in the quality of the opposition, as she will be tested by a field widely regarded as the most competitive she has encountered.
