Brendon McCullum has reaffirmed his dedication to his position as the England men’s head coach, following a 160-run defeat against New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge. The loss secured a 2-1 series victory for the Kiwis, marking a decisive conclusion to their tour.

Under McCullum’s leadership, England has faced a challenging period, losing seven of their last nine Test matches, including a heavy 4-1 defeat during the Ashes in Australia. Despite this being the Three Lions’ first home series loss since 2 eventually 2, McCullum remains resolute about his future with the side.

“My enthusiasm for English cricket and my commitment to English cricket has never wavered. I’ve got a firm belief in the direction that this team can go. We still have an identity about us, but we want to continue to furnish and harness that, to get us in a direction that we are the team that we want to be, and that we want to represent for the people of this country.

The talent that sits within this country is immense. We just need to make sure we continue to give that opportunity, but still get results along the way,” McCullum told Sky Sports.

Originally appointed as the Test coach, McCullum’s role was expanded in 2024 to oversee all formats. His attention now turns to the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, beginning July 1 at Chester-Le-Street. Given the condensed schedule, McCullum noted that squad selection and planning will depend heavily on player workload management. White-ball captain Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell were observed practicing with the white ball on the final morning of the Test.

“You can’t do anything about the scheduling; it is what it is. You’ve just got to operate around it, and the good thing is we’ve got some good strong options within our squad. We look to Durham in two days’ time, and we look at the workloads that some of our boys have had in this Test, and you work out what’s the right balance, and how do you manufacture it? When we get up to Durham, we’ll make our plan, and we’ll look forward to the India series getting underway,” McCullum said.

In a significant development, Test captain Ben Stokes—who has maintained a close professional partnership with McCullum—announced his retirement from international cricket on the fourth day of the match. Stokes intends to continue his career in domestic cricket following his departure from the international arena.
