British Climber, 28, Dies in Fall from Northern Spanish Summit

According to local law enforcement, a British man has died after plunging approximately 61 metres (200 feet) while descending from a mountain summit in northern Spain.

The 28-year-old mountaineer tumbled down a vertical gorge on the eastern side of the Torrecerredo—the highest peak of the Cantabrian Mountains—on Thursday afternoon, as reported by the Spanish Civil Guard for the Asturias region.

Rescue personnel aboard a helicopter located the deceased climber’s remains after sweeping the area, officials stated.

Two specialists were lowered to recover the man’s body and his scattered belongings.

The incident took place during the descent roughly 20 metres below the Torrecerredo summit, authorities confirmed.

The climber’s body was subsequently transported to La Morgal, a regional sports and aviation facility in Llanera, near the Asturian city of Gijón.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed that its officials had contacted local authorities regarding the death.

Standing at an elevation of approximately 2,649 metres, Torrecerredo is the highest peak of the Picos de Europa mountain range, a prominent part of the broader Cantabrian Mountains.
