Severe wildfires sweeping across Southern Europe this summer, fueled by a prolonged heatwave with temperatures reaching approximately 40°C (104°F), have particularly impacted regions in France, Portugal, and Spain.
Los Gallardos mayor Francisco Miguel Reyes described the aftermath of the fires to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, stating, “It feels like a bomb has fallen on the area.” He emphasized, “This is the first time we’ve faced a fire as devastating as this.”
Emergency response efforts involve hundreds of firefighters, military personnel, and law enforcement officers, supported by 30 aircraft actively combating the blaze.
Forensic teams in Madrid are working to identify victims using DNA samples from families of the missing, though the process has been slowed by the challenge of collecting genetic material from relatives located in other countries.
The fires have claimed at least 12 lives, marking one of the deadliest wildfire incidents in Spanish history. Previous major events include a 1984 blaze on La Gomera in the Canary Islands, which killed 20 people, and a 1979 forest fire near Lloret de Mar in northeastern Spain that resulted in 21 deaths, including nine children.
France has also grappled with significant wildfires this summer, with over 10,000 residents evacuated from the foothills of the French Pyrenees on Monday. Authorities arrested 32 individuals on suspicion of igniting the fires on Saturday.
Climate change continues to exacerbate extreme weather conditions globally, with Europe experiencing warming at twice the global average rate, according to the Copernicus climate service. Rising temperatures are intensifying heatwaves, straining water resources, and increasing the frequency and severity of wildfires across the continent.
