Broadhurst Runs Final Laps for Olympic Qualifier at European Championships
The European Elite Boxing Championships commence in Sofia, Bulgaria on Thursday, as Great Britain fields a formidable squad rich in Commonwealth Games gold medals.
Amy Broadhurst, a former World and European champion for Ireland, is part of the British side preparing to compete for the nation.
Broadhurst transitioned from Ireland to Britain ahead of Paris 2024 to contest a spot on the Olympic team.
This tournament marks her first major championship appearance since returning to elite competition following the birth of her son.
“It’s tough, but we’re making it work and I’m fortunate to have the support around me,” Broadhurst told Sky Sports. “Our little boy is at the right age, which makes this possible.”
“He’ll travel with me to Sheffield every other week, and those weeks require juggling two demanding roles.”, she continued.
“I view this as my final attempt at the Olympic Games. Once this phase ends, everything is settled.”

The European contests provide a critical checkpoint on the pathway to Los Angeles 2028, though Broadhurst’s comeback has already proved fiercely competitive.
Having departed Ireland for Britain two years earlier in pursuit of Olympic qualification, she faces a grueling schedule balancing domestic obligations with elite sport.
Broadhurst described the demands: “Fighting weekly in Sofia while traveling back to Sheffield every other week means managing two demanding roles simultaneously.”
_”This represents my final push for the Olympic Games. Once we cross the finish line, there is nothing left to chase._”
Following these successes, the upcoming roundup highlights veteran pairings such as Ireland’s twice‑Olympic heroine Katie Taylor, who acts as Broadhurst’s longtime training companion.
Kelly Harrington, another two‑time Olympic champion, also entered the European circuit.
“I see the clash ahead as a spirited test”,”Broadhurst remarked regarding her current opponents. “Every encounter brings its own volatility, and I intend to advance one bout at a time.”
