Following the death of the country music icon on Tuesday, the producers of Dolly Parton’s “Dolly: A True Original Musical” have confirmed that the production will open on Broadway as originally planned.
In a statement provided to Variety, the producers shared, “As was Dolly’s wish, the Broadway production of ‘Dolly: A True Original Musical’ will begin previews on December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City. The official opening is set for January 19, 2027, which would have marked her 81st birthday.”
The musical offers a biographical journey through the life of the celebrated country-pop superstar.
After its world premiere in Nashville during the summer of 2025 under the title “Dolly: An Original Musical,” the show is preparing to transfer to New York with largely the same creative team. This includes music composed by Parton herself, featuring a mix of fresh compositions and beloved classics from her extensive catalog. The book is co-written by Parton and Maria S. Schlatter, with Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher at the helm. Choreographer Mandy Moore will also continue her work from the Nashville run. The producing team consists of Parton, Danny Nozell, Adam Speers of ATG Productions, and Gavin Kalin Productions.
When the Broadway announcement was first made, Parton shared her personal connection to the project, saying, “My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera really, and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it.” She added, “We have a wonderful director, sets, costumes, choreography, music, and all the things you need to make a wonderful, entertaining show. Can’t wait to see you there!”
Director Bartlett Sher reflected on the project’s origins, stating, “During our world premiere in Nashville, I was overwhelmed by the deep connection audiences have with Dolly. You mention her name, and people light up and share a time that she has inspired them and brought them joy. But despite all of that genuine love, Dolly has never really shared her story before. She’s offered glimpses and peeks, but this musical allows her to reveal the unfiltered story in her own words. As we prepare to come to Broadway, we’re thrilled to show that rhinestones were never her whole story.”
