Bruce Campbell Names the One Cult Character He’d Reunite With — And It’s Not Ash

Bruce Campbell, renowned for his iconic portrayal of Ash Williams in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy, has built a diverse and influential career spanning both film and television. His television work includes memorable performances in cult classics such as Xena: Warrior Princess, Jack of All Trades, Burn Notice, Invincible, and the continuation of his Ash saga in Ash vs. Evil Dead.

In a recent interview conducted prior to the release of his latest project, Ernie & Emma, Campbell addressed the possibility of returning to one of his most beloved characters. While he has declared his retirement from the role of Ash Williams following the character’s arc in the Evil Dead spin-off series, he revealed a surprising interest in revisiting another fan-favorite role from the 1990s.

“I don’t really need to revisit any of them, but Brisco would be fun as an older cowboy. He might be, he’s just a lawyer now. You know cause he was a lawyer in the show, he was a Harvard-educated lawyer. So he would just have his own practice in San Francisco. Lord Bowler would be killed cause Julius Carry is no longer with us, so I would have it start with ‘Who killed Lord Bowler?’ I’d start at his grave marker, and Brisco is a successful lawyer in San Francisco now, and Socrates [Christian Clemonson] has his own law firm now, and everyone’s rich and comfortable. There are a lot of bad guys beyond Bly [Billy Drago]. We killed Bly, but there’s a whole thread that they gotta mount up again. And you would have Brisco’s son, and maybe he’s the child of Brisco and Dixie that we didn’t meet before, and maybe there’s Bowler’s angry son who’s also a bounty hunter, so you get the young generation involved. There’s a lot you could do with it.”

Premiering in 1993, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. chronicled the story of its titular character, a gunslinger who abandons his potential legal career to embrace life in the American West. His transition into bounty hunting brings him into conflict with some of the most dangerous outlaws, many of whom wield advanced technology in a retro setting.

Campbell’s newest film, Ernie & Emma, follows the journey of a widowed retired pear salesman as he travels across the state to scatter his late wife Emma’s ashes. The movie blends humor with emotional depth, showcasing Campbell’s range as both an actor and filmmaker.

“The concept of getting complete control again over the movie, our title, our tagline, our campaign, the movie will go where we want it to go, it’ll take its own course if it takes its own course. We’re not even doing it correctly. The correct method is you get a distributor, or the real correct method is you get financed by somebody who already knows the release date. But that causes its own problems. Now they might have to rush your movie. Oopsie. Might not be as good cause you gotta do it quick quick quick. So this was a case where, finally, the appeal of that was worth every daunting aspect of it that we were not gonna have any oversight.”

Ernie & Emma is currently playing in select theaters.
