Burnham Pledges Electoral System Overhaul in Upcoming Election

Burnham did not specify the leadership of his proposed commission nor indicate when it would commence its activities.

The Liberal Democrats have voiced support for any amendment to the electoral system and have long urged Burnham to adopt proportional representation before the upcoming election, scheduled for no later than 2029.

Conversely, the Conservatives are expected to oppose any shift away from the first-past-the-post system.

Reform UK supported the introduction of proportional representation in the most recent election, though recent speculation suggests its enthusiasm for the proposal may have diminished.

After Burnham’s address, Reform leader Nigel Farage told broadcasters that he would be willing to discuss a possible system change “at some point,” while emphasizing that other matters were “far more urgent.”

He added, ‘Is this an absolute priority for the next general election? I don’t think so.’

Support for electoral reform is not unanimous within Labour; deputy leader Lucy Powell noted that “some members of the Labour Party” oppose it.

In an interview with Politics Live on BBC Two, she affirmed her personal backing for electoral reform but refrained from naming a specific system, pointing out that “many models” exist.

In the most recent UK election, the Liberal Democrats advocated for the adoption of a single transferable vote (STV) system, which is employed for Scottish council elections.

Alternative options comprise the additional member system, a hybrid model that merges first-past-the-post with regional party lists, and is used to elect members of the Scottish Parliament.

Earlier this year, the Welsh Senedd was elected for the first time under a closed-list proportional representation system.
