Burnham to Vow Increased Stability and Relief in Inaugural Address as Prime Minister

In his first address as Prime Minister outside No 10 on Monday, Andy Burnham is expected to pledge to provide citizens with “more breathing room.”

Burnham is anticipated to acknowledge the recent period of political volatility in the UK, expressing a keen awareness of the high turnover of prime ministers and emphasizing the urgent need for more stable and responsible governance.

He is expected to frame this transition as a period of “reflection and resolution,” asserting that the United Kingdom must confront its current challenges with honesty and transparency.

Following a meeting with King Charles III, Burnham will officially succeed Sir Keir Starmer as the UK’s 59th prime minister on Monday—marking the seventh change in leadership within a single decade.

In a letter released Sunday evening, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch offered Burnham “every success” in his new role but criticized his lack of a “clear plan.”

“You have refused calls to appear in Parliament for MP questions, and you have avoided serious media scrutiny,” Badenoch stated. “This is not a promising start.”

The letter also outlined Conservative commitments to reducing the welfare budget and urged the incoming leader to pledge against any new tax increases.

These comments follow previous remarks from Badenoch labeling Burnham a “people pleaser,” arguing that the nation requires a leader capable of making difficult decisions and standing firm against Labour MPs.

Burnham was officially named the Labour Party leader on Friday after securing the support of 379 MPs during a uncontested leadership race.

While some opposition parties have called for a general election to provide Burnham with a formal democratic mandate, Deputy Leader Lucy Powell has maintained that Burnham intends to fulfill the 2024 Labour manifesto with even greater ambition.

“He truly understands the necessity of the bolder, more significant measures required to deliver on our manifesto promises,” Powell told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg programme.
