A businessman named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has been elected mayor of a remote district in the Peruvian Andes, according to official local election results.
The 45-year-old candidate, whose name shares two names with some of history’s most notorious dictators, won the mayoral race for the district of Queropalca in Peru’s central Huánuco region. He is scheduled to assume office on January 1st.
Representing the left-wing political party Ahora Nación, Flores secured 229 votes out of the 663 ballots cast during the October 4th elections, as confirmed by the national electoral authority.
His closest opponent, far-right candidate Gaspar Osorio, came in second with 204 votes.
Electoral records show that Flores, who works in the freight transportation sector, was previously affiliated with the right-wing Popular Force party, led by Keiko Fujimori, until 2025.
The historical stigma associated with the name of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler has not prevented several individuals sharing it from pursuing and winning political office in Peru.
In 2021, physician Hitler Saavedra Castornoque was elected to the national parliament representing the centrist Somos Peru party.
Likewise, in 2018, Hitler Alba Sánchez was elected mayor of the Andean district of Yungar, famously declaring during his campaign that he was “the good Hitler.”
