This week’s Calgary Flames news and rumors feature growing discussions regarding Ryan Huska’s future following a difficult season start. Trade speculation is also intensifying around defenseman Zach Whitecloud, with specific interest emerging from one notable franchise. Additionally, uncertainty persists regarding Connor Zary’s role within the organization, while newcomer Aydar Suniev is earning praise following his recent recall.
Pressure Mounts on Ryan Huska
While low expectations were set for the Flames this season, their initial 0-5-0 start was unexpectedly poor. Before securing their first victory on Tuesday, the team had been outscored by a staggering 27-8 margin. This significant struggle prompted analysts, including Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, to question Huska’s job security over the weekend.

“I think the one team everyone’s kind of looking at right now is Calgary,” Friedman noted. “I don’t know if that’s fair, but I recognize it’s kind of out there.”
Speaking on Monday’s 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman suggested that while General Manager Craig Conroy is known for his loyalty and patience, continued lopsided losses could ultimately test that resolve.
Zach Whitecloud Drawing Trade Interest
As the season unfolds, rumors regarding potential Calgary trade assets are increasing. While pending UFA Morgan Frost is frequently cited as a primary candidate for movement, other names are entering the conversation.
Defenseman Zach Whitecloud is reportedly attracting attention. Although the Flames have no immediate necessity to move the 29-year-old—who is under contract through the 2027-28 season—his $2.75 million cap hit makes him an attractive option for contending teams.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have emerged as a potential suitor, seeking right-shot defensive depth following injuries to Chris Tanev. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Toronto has made inquiries regarding Whitecloud’s availability.
“I look at a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team looking to bolster their blue line. The previous regime had a lot of interest in him,” Pagnotta stated on DFO Insider. “I believe there have been at least exploratory inquiries… I think they’re one of the teams that would look at him.”
Connor Zary’s Uncertain Future
Connor Zary remains a key figure in trade discussions. The Flames recently surprised the league by placing the 25-year-old on waivers; after clearing, he was assigned to the Calgary Wranglers. His long-term future in the AHL remains uncertain.

“I think they’ve discussed taking a contract back. They’ve talked about it with Vancouver. I don’t know how likely that is,” Friedman remarked on the 32 Thoughts podcast. “I think there’s a couple other teams still that are in on this… We’ll see.”
Despite areas for development, Zary possesses significant upside. The 2020 first-round pick has appeared in 193 NHL games and demonstrated notable offensive potential, suggesting a change of scenery might help revitalize his career.
While the Flames have faced early-season struggles, Aydar Suniev has provided a bright spot. Recalled shortly after Zary was waived, Suniev has impressed immediately.
In his first three games, Suniev has recorded three points, including a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s victory against the Anaheim Ducks. This offensive production suggests he may remain with the NHL club as Calgary searches for consistent scoring.
Flames Schedule Outlook
The Flames aim to build momentum from Tuesday’s win, but their upcoming schedule presents significant challenges. They face two high-caliber opponents this week: the Vegas Golden Knights on the road this Thursday, followed by a home matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
