Australia has received a significant boost ahead of the series-deciding third Test against South Africa, with all-rounder Cameron Green confirming his full fitness for the crucial clash in Cape Town. Green is set to return to the side as a specialist batter, having recovered from an abdominal injury sustained during the final ODI against South Africa on September 30. His timely return is a major lift for Australia, who are seeking to rebound after suffering a heavy innings-and-31-run defeat in the second Test at Gqeberha, leaving the three-match series tied at 1-1.
Green missed the opening two matches of the series as he raced to overcome the abdominal strain. However, his recovery has progressed far quicker than initially anticipated, and the all-rounder expressed confidence in his physical readiness for the upcoming fixture.
“I’m all good to go. Pretty surprised with how quick it’s actually healed or how functional I feel only a few weeks after,” Green was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.
Although Green was recently seen bowling during Saturday’s net sessions, it is highly unlikely that he will take the new ball in the third Test. His primary role will be to bolster Australia’s middle order, which struggled under pressure during the previous encounter at Gqeberha, where the team was dismissed for just 99 in the first innings. Green is expected to slot straight into the playing XI, likely replacing Nic Maddinson.
The 27-year-old is highly adaptable and capable of batting across various positions in the order, though he feels most comfortable at No. 4 or No. 5. Green reflected on his recent performances, highlighting the positives from Australia’s Tests against Bangladesh at Mackay and Darwin.
“I think I’ve had a lot of experience up and down the order,” the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder mentioned.
Green has been drawing on lessons from both his recent domestic and international commitments to prepare for the Cape Town challenge. He emphasized how his performances in the Bangladesh Tests and his recent Sheffield Shield cricket have shaped his mindset heading into the series decider.
“Certainly (the Tests) up in Mackay and Darwin were huge positives in kind of how I wanted to play the game. There are probably learnings I took from the last Shield game I played, (in) kind of how I wanted to play and it felt pretty natural to me,” Green said.
The third and final Test is scheduled to commence on October 27 at Newlands in Cape Town. Australia will need to deliver a much-improved batting performance to regain control of the series following their heavy loss in the second Test. Green’s return provides the team with the much-needed stability and tactical flexibility required to challenge South Africa in the decisive fixture.
