The eyes of Canada were all on Vancouver, and then they were on Ismael Kone.
As Canada made history with a 6‑0 victory over Qatar on Thursday, recording their first World Cup win, the atmosphere at B.C. Place was a mixture of triumph and sorrow following Kone’s severe leg fracture.
Canada is virtually certain to progress from Group B to the knockout stage, but will have to do so without Kone, one of their most influential players.
“It had everything to be such a special night. I think we entered the game pretty well. We know we came here to do very good, to win the game, to make it such a beautiful day for Canada, but at the same time you feel so empty up after what happened to Ismael,” said captain Stephen Eustaquio after the match. “It’s unfortunate… We love him like family, and it’s so unfortunate that happened. We just have to continue. He’s going to want us to win the next match, and that’s what we’re going to try to do for him.”
After recovering from a spate of injuries—including Alphonso Davies’ hamstring—Canada now hopes to top Group B and advance to the knockout round slated for 2 July at B.C. Place.
With Switzerland beating Bosnia‑Herzegovina 4‑1 earlier, the Swiss face a must‑win on 24 June if they want to claim top spot. Canada currently leads the group on goal difference; a draw would secure first place for the Canadians.
Jonathan David scored twice in the first half and added a late third for Canada, while Cyle Larin turned a blocked shot into a goal that gave the hosts a 3‑0 lead at the break.
Qatar’s Homam Ahmed was sent off in the first half, and Asim Madibo received a VAR‑driven red card for the bone‑breaking tackle on Kone, a sound loud enough to be heard from the upper deck.
52,497 spectators filled B.C. Place, marking the second consecutive sellout for the tournament.
