Canon has launched its innovative Dual Pixel 3D (DP3D) technology, enabling users to create immersive three-dimensional images and videos using their compatible EOS mirrorless cameras. This technology leverages Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus system, which divides each pixel into two photodiodes to capture slightly different views. This data is then used to generate depth information, allowing users to manipulate depth effects through Canon’s free DP3D Converter app.
The Dual Pixel AF system has long provided fast and accurate focusing. With DP3D, this precision is repurposed to extract depth data from images. For best results, users should shoot on a clean background, avoid excessive depth variations, and ensure proper exposure and focus. The software works with specific Canon RF lenses and requires images captured in Dual Pixel RAW format, which doubles file size and requires more storage. While shooting in this mode may slow down performance, it unlocks advanced post-processing capabilities.
The DP3D app is currently available for Windows 11 users, offering tools to create 3D models (exportable as OBJ or GLB files) or short stereoscopic preview videos. Users can adjust depth levels, isolate subjects, and replace backgrounds. To use the app, download it from Canon’s website, extract the installer, and follow the setup wizard. Regional settings and language preferences must be selected during installation. Sample images, including food and flowers, are also available for practice.
For processing, users must select their Dual Pixel RAW files within the app. The software allows tweaking depth effects, creating 3D models for editing in Blender or Windows 3D Viewer, or generating preview videos for social media. While the results may appear limited compared to AI-based methods, DP3D provides a unique way to repurpose existing camera hardware. The free-to-use app is a valuable tool for marketers and creatives seeking to add a 3D dimension to their visuals, though its utility remains niche compared to more advanced solutions.
