Ten filmmakers presented their AI-native short films at the recent Raindance Film Festival in London, part of the “Lost Canon” project produced by Moonmax and developed entirely using CapCut Video Studio.
This initiative was jointly commissioned by CapCut, an AI-driven creative platform with users in over 200 regions, Moonmax, a studio specializing in next-generation storytelling, and the Raindance Film Festival.
Participants were tasked with envisioning stories, artifacts, locations, events, and cultural phenomena that had never been created before. Each film was entirely conceived, developed, and finalized within CapCut Video Studio, a canvas-based AI production environment that integrates ideation, storyboarding, scene generation, editing, and final export in one platform.
The ten films feature works by various creators: “Black-Op77” by Frankie Caradonna; “Delete Forever” by Phill Turner; “Soft Play” by Ikenna Mokwe; “Cinema West!” by Jagger Waters; “What Chivalry Is This” by Toby Hyder; “Theodore and Wilson” by Ben Abergel; “All My Kitties” by Katharina Gellein Viken; “Mothmen” by Jan-Willem Blom; “Mayoiga” by Paige Piskin; and “E14” by Tamas Olajos.
According to Daniel Gordon, head of AI at Raindance and CEO of Moonmax, the “Lost Canon” concept carries dual significance. He notes, “These tools empower creators to bring into existence ideas that might otherwise remain unrealized. AI enables filmmakers to craft narratives that were previously unattainable due to accessibility, feasibility, or cost constraints.”
Prior to the premiere, the involved creators chronicled their creative journey on social media, sharing concept reveals, behind-the-scenes footage, teasers, and promotional artwork. Raindance, historically supportive of emerging filmmakers and innovative storytelling formats, provided the festival platform for this project.
Lewis Graham, partnerships and community lead at CapCut, emphasizes, “This is precisely the type of AI-driven filmmaking we envisioned with Video Studio—equipping creators to construct entirely novel worlds and blur the line between fiction and historical narrative.”
