Vozinha has emerged as a cult hero following his impressive display against Spain, drawing millions of new followers across social media platforms.
The veteran keeper has earned 91 caps for the Cape Verde national team and is currently a first‑team member at Chaves, a club competing in Portugal’s second tier. His career has spanned clubs in Slovakia, Angola, Moldova and Cyprus.
“I was moved to tears because I was raised by my grandparents,” Vozinha said following the goalless encounter. “They passed away a few years ago, and they meant the world to me.”
“And I also wished for my mother to be there. Unfortunately, visa restrictions and the associated costs prevented her from accompanying us. I would love for her to witness the moment.”
At 40 years and 12 days old, Vozinha became the oldest player to feature in a national team’s inaugural World Cup appearance.
He began his professional career at 25, in 2012, and reflected on how late that start made certain goals seem out of reach.
“I considered stepping away from the national squad, but the dream of representing my country pulled me forward,” he added.
Cape Verde will face Uruguay on 21 June, followed by a match against Saudi Arabia on 27 June in Group H.
