[A Young St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Announces Immediate Retirement Following Disappointing Start]
The St. Louis Cardinals have enjoyed a jumpstart on what was once seen as a potentially lengthy rebuilding project, posting a winning record in the competitive National League Central division as they give several younger players opportunities to develop.
But the team’s longer-term plans to contend might have taken a step back this week as the organization unexpectedly lost a young pitching prospect to retirement amid a difficult stretch on the mound.
After beginning his first full professional season in the rookie-level Florida Complex League and earning a promotion to Class-A this season, 23-year-old Owen Rice has abruptly concluded his career, according to the official transaction log.
St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Retires Shortly After First Promotion
Rice’s retirement occurred at a notable point in his young professional journey.
“It’s not every day that you encounter a 23-year-old athlete choosing to retire,” Patrick McAvoy noted for OnSI. “Rice was selected as a 20th-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This season, he commenced with the FCL Cardinals and registered a 5.84 ERA across 11 appearances. He was elevated to Class-A on June 27 and made his debut with the team that day. In his first inning pitched, he allowed three runs and issued four bases on balls. Three days later, he announced his decision to end his professional baseball career.”
While neither Rice nor the Cardinals have publicly elaborated on the reasons behind his choice as of this writing, the timing created one of the more atypical minor league headlines of the season.
Merely a few days separated what seemed to be a major career milestone — his first promotion to full-season baseball — from the declaration that his professional career had come to an end. And according to the reports, this setback in his Class-A debut may have influenced the decision.
Rice commenced his professional career following a distinguished collegiate tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where his coaches believed he had the potential to thrive at the next level.
“This is an exhilarating day for Owen as he gets to pursue his aspiration of being drafted into professional baseball by the St. Louis Cardinals,” the institution’s head coach, Shaun Wegner, remarked at the time. “We recognized from his initial bullpen session in the fall of 2022 that he embodied the physical characteristics and frame to excel as a professional athlete.”
Unfortunately, that opportunity lasted merely one professional season with the organization after his initial promotion resulted in a challenging performance on the field.
