[PRIME MINISTER CARNEY WARNS AGAINST ALBERTA INDEPENDENCE VOTE, DRAWS BREXIT PARALLEL]
TORONTO — TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has cautioned against Alberta’s potential vote on independence, comparing it to Brexit as a “dangerous bluff.” He emphasized that such a move could create long-term instability, citing his firsthand experience during the UK’s exit from the European Union and the ongoing challenges faced post-Brexit.
The vote, set for October 19, comes after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced plans to seek a binding referendum on leaving Canada. Smith’s party had not previously included this issue in its electoral platform, raising questions about the timing and transparency of the proposal.
Carney, who served as the Bank of England’s governor during Brexit, warned of the risks of populist referendums, stating, “This isn’t a solution—it’s a distraction. We have to ensure stability and prosperity, not division.” He highlighted that Albertans did not directly vote for the referendum in the last provincial election, calling it undemocratic.
“It’s important to address Albertans’ concerns through dialogue, not drastic measures,” Carney said, stressing the need for a unified Canada to attract investment and ensure economic growth.
Smith, who has consistently supported Alberta’s role in Canada, framed the vote as a response to federal policies under Justin Trudeau, which she criticized as harmful to the province’s interests. She argued that Albertans deserve a say in decisions affecting their resources and future.
Carney, currently spearheading efforts to build a new oil pipeline to Canada’s Pacific coast, emphasized the need for collaboration between Alberta and Ottawa. “We must work together to unlock Alberta’s potential while strengthening Canada’s economy,” he said.
In response, Smith reaffirmed her stance, urging federal leaders to address Alberta’s grievances constructively. “The focus should be on resolving issues, not dismissing them,” she stated, calling for renewed trust in Canada’s shared prosperity.
