Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has weighed in, likening Kerkez to Darwin Núñez in the full‑back role. He argues that the Hungarian tends to charge forward at full speed, lacking tactical awareness and sound decision‑making.

Kerkez’s Underwhelming Form

Both Kerkez and Frimpong have faced criticism for their defensive frailties, leaving Liverpool’s full‑back positions looking exposed. The club has yet to secure alternatives during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have already leaked four goals in just two Premier League outings against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, suggesting they could face even greater difficulty against stronger opponents.

Carragher told The Overlap: “The understanding of the game is really, really poor. Like, as you say, you’re watching the game, you’re thinking, why has he done that?

“I described Kerkez last season and it was his first season and maybe it felt a bit harsh at the time. He’s the ‘Darwin Nunez of fullbacks’, but it’s like it’s just head down and run and it’s just like, whoa, everything Kerkez does is 100mph. Every time he closes someone down, every time he passes it.”

Liverpool’s Full‑Back Conundrum

Liverpool have struggled to find suitable replacements for Trent Alexander‑Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

It will be telling whether the club chooses to invest in these positions in the forthcoming transfer windows. Clearly, the defensive output has been lacking, and strengthening the back line will be essential if Liverpool hopes to challenge for major honours again.
