Martinez publicly criticized the technical director following events in Madrid.

Wilcox was not named in Martinez’s statement. The former Leeds and Blackburn player was appointed United’s sporting director after Dan Ashworth was dismissed in December 2024, and had participated in discussions with Martinez that preceded the player’s public remarks on his conduct.

Wilcox has returned to public scrutiny, having also been criticized by Ruben Amorim during the latter’s final press conference before his departure in January.

The 55-year-old executive has made just one public appearance since then, speaking to the club’s in-house media channel a year ago.

“I don’t believe it’s my place to say whether he should or shouldn’t,” Carrick responded when asked if Wilcox ought to address the media regarding his actions.

“I have no issue standing here, speaking with you all and leading the group, the team, and the football club from this position. We are all in this together.”

Carrick indicated that he does not view Martinez’s omission of Wilcox by name as a problem.

“He has issued his statement, acknowledged his mistake, and I believe that is sufficient for all of us to move forward,” he said.

“We ask for passion, emotion, fire, and for our players to care. There is a right way to demonstrate those qualities, and that has already been acknowledged.”

“However, we must carry that intensity, willingness, unity, and spirit. As a collective, we need to channel it properly and use it in the right manner.”
