A member of South Africa’s Lions rugby squad has tragically passed away in France, just days before their scheduled Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. According to reports from French media, the player was discovered unconscious in a shower stall at the team’s hotel on Île de Ré, an island off the western coast of France. The team had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.
Emergency services were dispatched shortly after 10 a.m. local time, but despite efforts to revive the player, who was in cardiorespiratory arrest, he was pronounced dead. The incident casts a shadow over the Lions’ upcoming fixtures, including their highly anticipated debut in the Champions Cup, as well as two subsequent matches in Scotland as part of the United Rugby Championship. The identity of the player has not yet been officially confirmed.
