Cash App is debuting a new piece of hardware this Thursday, drawing inspiration from a social media trend where users pay for purchases using homemade “magic wands” that conceal tap-and-pay credit cards. Now, the fintech giant is offering an official, $25 NFC-powered wand as part of a broader hardware lineup that the company intends to expand with various new form factors in the coming months.
These tags are linked directly to the Cash App Card and are compatible with any merchant utilizing Visa’s tap-to-pay infrastructure. Users can activate the device by linking the hardware to the app, and there is no minimum balance requirement for the tag to function.
Designed for convenience, the wand includes a keychain ring for easy attachment to clothing or bags, making it an ideal solution for environments where accessing a smartphone is inconvenient, such as sporting events or concerts. Beyond utility, the whimsical nature of the device is designed to appeal to younger demographics, turning a mundane transaction into a social experience.
Security remains a priority; users receive instant spending notifications and have the ability to lock or unlock the tag via the app. In the event of loss or theft, the tag can be deactivated instantly. The company also confirmed that integrated fraud monitoring is in place to protect users’ funds.
“While digital wallets are invisible and physical cards are often buried in wallets, Cash App Tags are just the opposite. We see a unique opportunity here to make payments visible and social for the first time,” stated Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block.
Block plans to release additional tag designs, including limited-edition drops, over the next few months, with several versions becoming permanently available by this summer.
This launch is a strategic move to further capture the Gen Z market. The Block-owned company has been steadily expanding its reach to younger audiences, having introduced teen accounts in 2021 and recently launching parent-controlled debit cards for children aged six to 12.
