Catania Airport Halts Operations as Mount Etna Spews Dense Volcanic Ash

Flights at Italy’s Catania Airport were grounded on Saturday after heavy volcanic ash from Mount Etna’s latest eruption combined with adverse weather conditions, according to the airport’s operating company.

The facility, which ranks as Italy’s fifth-busiest by passenger volume, has suspended all incoming flights until 1000 GMT on Sunday.

While Europe’s most active volcano routinely disrupts air travel at the Sicilian hub, ash emissions have been exceptionally intense this summer, stranding thousands of passengers during the peak holiday season.
