Powerful Nor’easter Slams Northeast, Triggering Emergencies in New York and New Jersey

A powerful nor’easter swept across the northeastern United States this weekend, placing tens of millions of people in its path and delivering a dangerous mix of coastal flooding, widespread power outages, travel disruption, and event cancellations.

The storm peaked on Saturday, prompting the National Weather Service to warn of life-threatening coastal flooding, hazardous beach conditions, strong winds, and heavy rainfall for major population centers including New York City and Boston.

Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency as the system intensified. New Jersey bore the early brunt of the coastal deluge, while heavy rain and high winds were forecast from Virginia to Maine.

High-profile events fell victim to the weather, including Ed Sheeran’s highly anticipated concert in Boston, which was called off due to safety concerns.

The nor’easter knocked out electricity to nearly 150,000 homes and businesses across the region, according to tracking site PowerOutage.us.

Air travel ground to a halt at major hubs. The Federal Aviation Administration urged passengers to check with carriers, as FlightAware data showed more than 1,100 flight delays and roughly 400 cancellations.

Forecasters cautioned that Saturday’s full moon would amplify tidal surges, exacerbating coastal inundation. In New Jersey, streets and homes were already submerged in the shore communities of Surf City and Manasquan.
