[Chaminda Vaas Named Delhi Capitals’ Fast‑Bowling Coach]

In a video released by DC on Saturday, Vaas explained that he gives bowlers considerable freedom. As a former fast bowler, he emphasizes that players should have clear plans; if they lack awareness, he offers guidance rooted in his experience and understanding of field conditions.

Yet, he adds that every bowler must understand their own strengths and the specific field setting. When athletes grasp those fundamentals, the coach’s role becomes one of mentorship rather than instruction.

This represents Vaas’ inaugural IPL coaching appointment, despite a long track record in international cricket.

His coaching history includes multiple spells with Sri Lanka – from 2012‑15 through 2016‑17 and a brief 2021 stint, the latter ending after two days due to a pay dispute – as well as a 2022 departure following another contract. His initial career began as a consultative advisor for the New Zealand men’s squad, and in 2016 he contributed to Ireland’s side during the World T20 tournament.

After several years serving as a fast‑bowling consultant and academy mentor for Sri Lanka Cricket, Vaas helped lead the NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and was appointed head coach of the Kandy Royals in the 2026 Indian Premier League season.

Together with Amit Mishra, who will serve as DC’s spin‑bowling coach, both players have already participated in the delivery of Delhi’s academy talent.

Cricinfo noted in June that DC prepared to reshape its coaching roster above; the previous team included Venugopal Rao (team director), Hemang Badani (head coach), Munaf Patel (bowling coach) and Ian Bell (assistant coach).

The revised setup reflects an agreement between DC’s co‑owners—GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and Jindal South West (JSW)—that each party will assume operational control of the franchise in alternating two‑year blocks.
