LAS VEGAS — Chaney Johnson may lack ideal size and recognition, but his work ethic sets him apart. The second-year Brooklyn Nets player is turning heads during Summer League action with his relentless effort and athletic ability.
“I knew Chaney was a beast. It’s further confirmed,” assistant coach Dutch Gaitley said. “During the ESPN interview about our rookies, when they asked who we haven’t discussed yet, I pointed to Chaney Johnson. The reason is Chaney plays center because we need him at center.
“If we needed Chaney to play point guard, he would. He does whatever is required for the team. He’s an exceptional teammate who gives maximum effort every time he steps on the court. I believe he has a promising future ahead.”
Johnson posted a game-high 20 points, 10 rebounds and five steals in Brooklyn’s 83-76 defeat to Atlanta. He has reached double-figure scoring in all four of his Summer League outings, consistently performing despite being asked to play out of position at center.
“That dude is a dog,” Egor Demin said. “He’s every teammate’s favorite because he does all the dirty work without expecting anything in return. He simply does it because that’s his nature.
“Sometimes I feel bad because we don’t recognize him enough for his contributions to our success. He handles it with great humility – always ready to help the team and his teammates. My appreciation for him is hard to put into words. He’s remarkable.”
Through the Summer League slate, Johnson averages 15 points while shooting 64.7 percent from the field, along with 8.8 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game, all while operating at center despite his 6-foot-7 frame.
“I focus on going out there and playing hard, controlling what I can control,” Johnson said.
When questioned about his potential development as a center, he responded, “It’s whatever pays the bills, you know? I’ll do whatever it takes. Whatever the team needs, I’m available.”
Demin and rookie Mikel Brown Jr. sat out Saturday’s contest but are slated to return Tuesday against the Kings. Joshua Jefferson made his Summer League debut, contributing nine points on 1-for-8 shooting.
Danny Wolf added 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting to go with five rebounds, though he managed just one assist against four turnovers.
“We need the opposite,” Gaitley noted.
Rookie Zuby Ejiofor from St. John’s recorded 13 points and six rebounds for Atlanta.
