Charlie Woods Exits Junior Amateur Playoff Over Camera Distraction

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Charlie Woods missed the match‑play stage of the U.S. Junior Amateur after finishing 13th in a 14‑player playoff that awarded only two advancing spots.

On Tuesday, the 15‑time major champion’s son was tied for 63rd after shooting 76 and 70 on the two Saucon Valley layouts, finishing at 5 over par. He was eliminated on Wednesday with a bogey when a phone camera emitted a click during his third shot on the opening playoff hole — a distraction that rarely affects other competitors.

On the par‑5 opening hole, Woods struck his second shot into the rough near the green, but his third shot was compromised when he heard the camera click during his backswing.

“Really, dude?” an annoyed Woods remarked after the errant shot, adding, “I mean, come on.”

Miles Russell, who will soon be teammates with Woods at Florida State, captured the stroke‑play co‑medalist honor with a 6‑under 135.

Woods needed a birdie to progress past the opening playoff hole, but he settled for a bogey. Ultimately, Eli Wessel and Hudson Kutchma advanced after posting pars on the second playoff hole, a par‑3 fifth.
