Brandon Williams, the Whitby, Ontario musician behind Chastity, crafts music that defies easy categorization. His work blends elements of heavy emo, heart-on-sleeve shoegaze, and fuzz-soaked power-pop, evoking comparisons to Jesu and the Promise Ring simultaneously. It’s a distinctive sound that’s difficult to pin down but impossible to ignore.
Williams is set to follow his 2024 self-titled Chastity album with a new full-length record titled I Built This Prison Myself. The album draws inspiration from a significant event in local history: in 1976, a 16-year-old patient at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital—the same town where Williams grew up—set fire to a massive barn on the hospital grounds. The act stands as a powerful symbol of resistance against institutional control. Notably, Williams launched his musical career by organizing DIY punk shows at a barn in Whitby, lending the location personal significance.
The lead single, “Misled Youth,” showcases Williams’ signature approach: a heartfelt fuzz-pedal driven track delivered with an earnest, desperate yelp. It’s a compelling preview of what’s to come from the upcoming album.
