Chelsea are set to challenge Arsenal for the signing of England centre‑back John Stones, who is available on a free transfer, according to The Telegraph.
The England international is now a free agent after Manchester City released him at the end of last month.
Nevertheless, he was included in England’s World Cup squad and delivered several standout performances for his country.
Arsenal have considered signing him to provide cover for William Saliba, who has suffered a back injury.
However, they may encounter strong competition from Chelsea, who are also evaluating a contract offer for the centre‑back.
Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix is the primary centre‑back target for Chelsea, though they remain open to other options.
Stones is presently on holiday following his World Cup exploits and will decide on his future after a three‑week break.
His agent continues to negotiate with potential clubs, and a final decision on his next club is expected in late August.
