Xabi Alonso has emphasized that Cole Palmer remains fully committed to representing England, explaining that the Chelsea playmaker missed the recent international window due to a groin issue related to the injury that affected him for most of last season.
Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment with Palmer’s withdrawal from the start of England’s Nations League campaign last month, suggesting the 24-year-old is missing too many opportunities to play for his country and questioning his desire to be part of the squad.
However, Palmer’s withdrawal was for legitimate reasons. The forward struggled with persistent groin pain throughout last season, which ultimately led to his exclusion from Tuchel’s World Cup squad. He experienced minor discomfort before Chelsea’s defeat to Brentford last month, and while the issue requires ongoing management, Alonso is confident his star player intends to wear the Three Lions jersey when fit.
“The most important thing for Cole is to be fully fit, to enjoy his football, and to feel good,” said Chelsea’s manager. “When he’s not at his best, like in the Brentford game, you can see he’s struggling. He’s committed, but he needs to be completely fit to play. Both the club and the national team need him at his peak.”
Alonso clarified that the current situation is far less severe than Palmer’s struggles last season when he found it difficult to shoot properly. The extended break has aided his recovery. “He’s fine now,” Alonso stated. “He’s been feeling better this week. We used the first two weeks to help him recover. It’s related to the pubalgia he dealt with previously.”
With strong competition in England’s attacking midfield positions, it remains uncertain whether Tuchel will select Palmer for upcoming matches against Croatia and Spain. When asked whether a player can be considered world-class without participating in international football, Alonso responded philosophically: “Things happen naturally. When you demonstrate your quality at club level and maintain consistency, it’s typically the natural progression to earn national team recognition.”
Alonso also addressed criticism from broadcaster Piers Morgan, who recently labeled Palmer as a “bottle job” for withdrawing from England duty: “I’m not familiar with that comment or that individual.”
Palmer has started the season in fine form for Chelsea, scoring four goals. His availability will be crucial as the Blues seek to recover from three consecutive winless league matches. Alonso is also hopeful of having Reece James, Moisés Caicedo, and Marc Guiu available for the Bournemouth fixture.
