Chelsea are reportedly prepared to explore a potential transfer for Real Madrid right‑back Trent Alexander‑Arnold should he become available. According to reporter Simon Phillips, the Blues are scouting for a new right‑back and could look to bring the former Liverpool star back to the Premier League.
The England international has been hailed as a top‑class talent during his time at Liverpool, and despite a less successful stint at the Bernabéu, he remains regarded as one of the best players in his position when fit. Chelsea see an opportunity to bring him in if his spell in Spain ends early.
Do Chelsea Need Trent Alexander‑Arnold?
Chelsea already have Reece James, Malo Gusto and Marc Palestra vying for right‑back spots, so the necessity of adding Alexander‑Arnold is debatable. However, the 28‑year‑old is still widely regarded as one of the world’s best at his position when at his peak, and the squad could benefit from his experience and quality.
James is an excellent defender but has suffered recurring injuries, prompting the club to consider a reliable alternative for the starting role.

Does Trent Alexander‑Arnold Fit Xabi Alonso’s System?
Xabi Alonso’s preferred 3‑4‑3 formation often utilises wing‑backs, a role Pedro Neto has already adapted to under the new manager. It remains to be seen whether Alexander‑Arnold could thrive in a similar defensive capacity for Chelsea.
There is also speculation that he could be employed as a midfielder, a position he has occupied for England on occasion. While not his primary métier, the arrival of Alexander‑Arnold could provide depth in midfield after the departure of Enzo Fernández, offering flexibility for the club’s tactical plans.
