A chemical tank implosion at a Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries Saturday morning, according to authorities.
Emergency responders remained on-site throughout the day as investigators sought to determine the cause of the 7:15 a.m. incident. Officials confirmed fatalities and multiple critical injuries but have not released specific casualty numbers.
The explosion occurred at an 80,000-gallon tank that was approximately 60 percent full. The tank contained “white liquor,” a chemical solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide used in paper pulp production.
PeaceHealth St John Medical Center in Longview reported receiving nine patients, including one fatality. Six patients were listed in fair condition, while two were transferred to other medical facilities. At least nine workers and one firefighter were hospitalized.
Authorities stated that the implosion posed no immediate threat to the surrounding community. The investigation is ongoing, with the Longview Fire Department, Nippon Dynawave, and Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office collaborating on the probe.
In related news, authorities in Orange County, California, confirmed Tuesday that monitoring operations had stabilized at a GKN Aerospace facility where an overheating tank containing methyl methacrylate had raised explosion concerns earlier in the week.
The Orange County Fire Authority reported that temperature readings were steady and that displaced residents could return home as cleanup efforts continued.
