Chicago Fire FC and Robert Lewandowski are finalizing the details of a potential transfer that would bring the Poland international to Major League Soccer this summer, according to a source familiar with the negotiations, as reported by ESPN.
Both parties are in the final stages of discussions but remain optimistic about reaching an agreement shortly. Lewandowski will join Chicago as a free agent following the expiration of his Barcelona contract after the 2025-26 season. The 34-year-old joins the Fire with an impressive resume, including seven major titles with Barcelona: three La Liga championships, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups.
Key Developments:
- Lewandowski’s Barcelona departure marks the end of an era, concluding his tenure that revitalized the club from mid-table struggles to La Liga dominance.
- ESPN’s latest ranking analyzes how World Cup performances are reshaping perceptions of Europe’s elite clubs.
- Manchester City’s record transfer fee for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson examines the financial arms race in modern football.
Before his Barcelona tenure, Lewandowski secured 10 Bundesliga titles across Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. He crowned his European career with a 2020 Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain (1-0), cementing his legacy as one of the Bundesliga’s greatest ever.
Under Gregg Berhalter’s leadership, Lewandowski will join the Eastern Conference side. Berhalter, who guided the Fire to their first playoff berth in eight years (wild-card round finish in 2025), praised the striker’s caliber:
“We think [Lewandowski would] be a great signing not only for the Chicago Fire,
but for the league,” says head coach Gregg Berhalter.
In 2025, Chicago secured third place in the Eastern Conference (26 points in 14 games), trailing only Nashville SC (29 points) and Inter Miami (27 points). Berhalter emphasized his team’s growth mindset: “We don’t want complacency. Improvement is possible at any stage of a player’s career,” he stated to ESPN.
A potential July 22 clash between Lewandowski’s Fire and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami at Miami’s Chase Stadium (formerly Nu Stadium) could materialize during MLS’s summer hiatus, which overlaps with the FIFA World Cup North America tournament.
While ESPN reported on Barcelona’s strategic rebuild, Sky Sports initially broke the news of Lewandowski’s impending Chicago move. MLS operations will resume mid-July following the World Cup break.
