Christopher Bell was examined and cleared at the infield medical center at Michigan International Speedway after a severe collision on lap 147 of the NASCAR Cup Series event.
The crash unfolded when Chase Elliott lost traction beneath Bell, causing both drivers to collide forcefully with the wall. Bell’s impact damaged the SAFER barrier, requiring extensive repairs, and Elliott subsequently struck Bell on the driver’s side.
Elliott was also assessed and released, later addressing the media, while Bell left the facility without comment. Team owner Joe Gibbs later confirmed at a post‑race press conference that Bell sustained injuries to his wrist and ankle.
Gibbs indicated that Bell’s condition would be monitored overnight. ‘We plan to ensure he receives whatever care he needs before he returns home,’ he said. ‘His wrist and ankle injuries will require further evaluation, so we must wait for more information.’
Joe Gibbs Racing has not released any additional statement beyond Gibbs’s remarks.
Elliott added that he does not appear to have any lasting effects from the incident.
“I feel okay,” Elliott said. “I deeply regret what happened; it was never intentional, and I have great respect for Bell.”
Bell exited his car under his own power and was approached on track by Elliott. After a brief conversation, Elliott offered a side‑hug and apologized for the incident.
“Elliott described the collision as a massive impact for both drivers. ‘Seeing the wall approach so quickly made it clear the severity,’ he said. ‘Bell had already struck the barrier before I hit him, and the damage was significant. I wanted to ensure he was okay and sincerely apologize, as the incident was not my intention.'”
