Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is performing strongly at the box office, but audiences will have to wait several years before his next project hits theaters.

The acclaimed director recently stated that it will be “at least” three years before his next film is released, continuing his pattern of releasing a major work roughly every three years, including Oppenheimer (2023), Tenet (2020), Dunkirk (2017), and Interstellar (2014).

In an interview with Today, Nolan described the intense demands of adapting Homer’s epic, saying, “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina. I mean, it’s The Odyssey—of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult.”

For The Odyssey, Nolan made history by shooting the entire film on IMAX 70mm film, explaining, “I went to IMAX and said, ‘Look, if ever we are going to fulfill this dream of shooting the entire movie that way, this is the one. This is The Odyssey.'”

The film has already opened worldwide with $257 million in its debut, marking Nolan’s highest global opening since The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which grossed $249 million.

Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and others, The Odyssey is currently in theaters.
