For viewers who have not yet seen Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, do not expect Odysseus to have a romantic encounter with Penelope.
Although the Oscar‑winning director’s ancient‑epic adaptation has already earned more than $600 million worldwide, he admitted he would be terrified to switch genres and direct a romantic comedy, describing it as one of the most challenging endeavors.
He said, “I believe making a rom‑com would be extremely difficult, though I enjoy watching such films,” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “But seriously, I think those who direct comedy—those who create comedy—face one of the toughest challenges in the world when it comes to making audiences laugh.”
He added, “The risk involved in showing a film is that if people don’t respond to certain parts, I can’t hide behind that; there’s no such luxury in comedy. Therefore, I would be terrified to attempt anything like that.”
The adaptation of Homer’s epic follows Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he endures extraordinary trials and mythical encounters during his ten‑year voyage home to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) after the Trojan War.
