Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Surges on X Amid Piracy and Record-Breaking Box Office

Piracy has quickly emerged for Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, following a high-quality bootleg of the film that reached millions of users on X after a viral post on July 25.

At 2:25 p.m. PT, a post on X reading “Someone uploaded ‘The Odyssey’ full movie on X. Can you believe it?” amplified a message from a now-suspended account. It shared a high-quality version of the film, a fact verified by Variety, and climbed to over 2.1 million views within two and a half hours. By that time, the stream was replaced by a takedown notice, and the account was subsequently suspended.

The leak does not appear to have impacted the film’s box office, as “The Odyssey” continued its surge in its second weekend, earning an additional $87 million and sustaining high demand for coveted IMAX 70 mm tickets.

As of July 26, a few clones of the bootlegged film remained available on X, but they were largely flooded away by mislabeled files that promised “The Odyssey” but instead delivered a Rickroll—the longstanding internet prank of tricking people into watching the music video for Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

Beyond piracy, X owner Elon Musk has been vocal with his opinions on the Christopher Nolan film, particularly criticizing the casting choices. He wrote, “Who specifically is the asshole who added DEI lies to Academy Awards eligibility instead of it just being about making the best movie?” Musk also stated that his AI tool Grok Imagine would create a “historically accurate” version of the film for release this year.
