The race for the Golden Boot is evolving into one of the most competitive in the history of the tournament.
Lionel Messi currently leads the standings with five goals from two matches, closely followed by Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, who have both netted four. This marks only the second time since 1954 that three different players have scored four or more goals within the first two games of a World Cup.
The sport’s elite forwards have delivered a series of extraordinary performances. Messi set a new World Cup scoring record with a double against Austria, while Mbappe mirrored the feat with two goals in France’s weather-delayed win over Iraq—a match that coincided with his 100th international cap.
Adding to the intensity, Erling Haaland secured Norway’s qualification for the round of 32 with two goals against Senegal, marking a prolific start to his World Cup career. With England’s Harry Kane also poised to build on his opening-day brace against Ghana, the competition is reaching a fever pitch.
French football expert Julien Laurens noted to BBC Sport that these stars are driven by more than just the tournament trophy. “With the big stars, they want the ball all the time,” Laurens explained. “I guess part of it is that they’re not just chasing the Golden Boot; a handful of them are chasing the all-time record too.”
Superstars Shatter Historic Records
The tournament began with Germany’s Miroslav Klose atop the all-time scoring charts with 16 goals. However, after just two matches, 38-year-old Messi has claimed the lead with 18 goals across 28 World Cup appearances, including all five of Argentina’s goals in this edition.
Mbappe is hot on his heels. The Frenchman has equaled Klose’s 16 goals in 16 matches and is now vying to become the first striker to win multiple Golden Boots while eventually surpassing Messi’s total. Laurens suggested that while many expected an “Mbappe show” due to the records he is chasing, the competition has become a multi-way battle.
Then there is the emergence of Haaland. While he won’t break the all-time record this month, the Manchester City phenomenon is already making history as only the sixth player to score multiple goals in each of his first two World Cup games. His international record for Norway—59 goals in 52 appearances—suggests he will be a perennial contender in the years to come.
Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist told ITV that while Messi possesses the superior natural ability and Mbappe follows closely, Haaland is peerless in front of goal. “It is impossible to compare these players,” McCoist said. “Harry Kane is a better all-round footballer than Haaland, but in terms of putting the ball in the back of the net, Haaland is probably the best out there.”
Former England midfielder Karen Carney echoed this sentiment, describing the recent fixtures as a “superstar day” where Messi stole the show, though the performances of Mbappe and Haaland were equally impressive.
The Pursuit of the ‘Inevitable’
From the opening whistle, records have tumbled. Beyond Messi’s all-time lead, Mbappe now tops the French scoring charts, Haaland has become Norway’s leading World Cup scorer in record time, and Kane has equaled Gary Lineker’s English record.
The ultimate target for these attackers is Just Fontaine’s 1958 record of 13 goals in a single tournament. Only Fontaine, Gerd Muller (1970), and Sandor Kocsis (1954) have ever reached double figures in one edition. Given the current scoring rate, that exclusive list is likely to expand.
The new 48-team format appears to be a catalyst for this goal surge. The inclusion of more lower-ranked teams has allowed the world’s best attackers to prosper, and the addition of an extra knockout round provides more opportunities to pad their tallies.
Former France defender Gael Clichy told BBC Sport that the current generation possesses a unique “fearless factor.” He noted that unlike previous eras where young players showed deference to veterans, today’s stars prioritize performance over age. “This generation has respect, but differently,” Clichy said. “Don’t talk about age, talk about performance.”
Despite the hype, Mbappe remains focused on the team. “Leo always scores. He always has and always will,” Mbappe stated. “If I start watching him, I’ll feel like I have to do even more… I’m only thinking about helping my team.”
Norway’s Stale Solbakken has been a vocal supporter of Haaland’s prospects. “He is the best striker,” Solbakken claimed. “It’s easier to win the Golden Boot when you play for France and Argentina, but we’ll try to give Erling more games and more help.”
USA striker Folarin Balogun, who has scored twice in his first two games, summed up the feeling of the other contestants with a joke: “I think it’s annoying. Seeing players like Messi, Mbappe, Haaland—they’re so inevitable. For me, it’s just about trying to get to that level—to be inevitable as well.”
