The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to make history on Friday, June 26, becoming the youngest cricketer to play for the Indian men’s team. Ahead of his momentous international debut against Ireland in the two‑match T20I series, he joined the dressing room and shared his initial impressions and thoughts on what this milestone means to the Samastipur‑born player.
Reflecting on the moment of donning his Indian jersey, he noted that words fail to capture the significance of becoming an Indian cricketer. He recalled that this was the very reason he picked up a bat and practiced at a young age. The 15‑year‑old, who has not yet reached puberty, said he does not yet know how to react to the occasion.
“Words truly cannot explain that. The reason I picked up the bat from day one and went to the cricket ground for practice: today that dream was fulfilled. The biggest step in that journey was completed today. I truly cannot put these feelings into words,” the youngster was quoted as saying in a social media post by BCCI.
“The moment I saw that t‑shirt, I could not stop smiling. Sometimes, some things happen that you never even imagine could happen. And when it finally does, you do not know how to react. That was exactly how I felt,” he added.
Sooryavanshi’s path to the international arena has been paved with achievements at the highest levels, including the Ranji Trophy, the ICC Under‑19 World Cup, and bilateral matches for India A. His talent further caught global attention during the Indian Premier League, where he scored 776 runs in 16 matches, earning the Orange Cap and other accolades in 2026.
In a recent outing before the international debut, he struck a thunderous 94 off just 29 balls in the final of the ODI tri‑series in Sri Lanka, helping India A secure victory. He also registered the fastest half‑century in List A cricket during that campaign.
Both T20Is will be played in Belfast, with the first on June 26 and the second on June 28. Shreyas Iyer will lead the Indian squad, which also features the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan. It will be intriguing to see whether any changes are made to the top order from the 2026 T20 World Cup, where India emerged triumphant.
