For over a decade, Cloud Nothings have established themselves as one of the most consistent and enduring forces in the indie rock scene. However, the band seems eager to step outside their usual comfort zone and explore new sonic territories. Now recording for Pure Noise—a label deeply rooted in post-hardcore and heavy music—Cloud Nothings are set to follow up their 2024 album Final Summer with their highly anticipated new record, What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?. Sonically, this new album represents a bold shift, drawing heavily from metal and heavy rock.
If you are familiar with their 2012 landmark album Attack On Memory, you already know that Cloud Nothings have the capability to deliver serious heft when the mood strikes. With drummer Jayson Gerycz showcasing his reputation as a powerhouse who can seamlessly blend speed and heaviness, a metal-influenced direction isn’t entirely surprising. Still, it is exciting to hear the band transition into this heavier gear while retaining their signature indie personality on their new single, “Death Keeps Me Alive.” The track is a doomy, crushing riff-monster that evokes comparisons to Cave-In and the Wipers, even incorporating subtle black metal elements toward its conclusion.
Frontman Dylan Baldi shared some insights about the new album and the single “Death Keeps Me Alive”:
The album is our attempt to pay homage to the heavy rock music we’ve been listening to over the last few years. Some pretty direct and popular musical influences on the tracks are Queens of the Stone Age, Motörhead, Earth, and Electric Wizard. We were feeling a little pigeonholed in the indie rock world and wanted to make a change in our sound that revealed a different facet of our interests and abilities…
Lyrically, I was inspired by a lot of more political metal and hardcor. The songs deal with cruel governments, the importance of community, and occasionally a general rage at the state of the world…
Lyrically, “Death Keeps Me Alive” is from the point of view of a lurking evil power that never gets fully defeated in the world and feeds off of death, war, and hate, which is kind of a fun generically “metal” thing to sing about. I hope people hear this song and get excited for what the rest of the record could possibly sound like, and recognize that this is going to be a new version of Cloud Nothings that didn’t really have a precedent prior to this recording.
The accompanying black-and-white music video for “Death Keeps Me Alive,” directed by Alex Scalzo-Brown, captures a moody, spooky-season aesthetic. Below, check out that clip, the What Kind of Hell Did You Survive? tracklist, and Cloud Nothings’ upcoming tour dates.
