Comedian Matt Lucas Refutes Claims of Upcoming ‘Little Britain’ Revival

Matt Lucas has refuted speculation regarding a potential Little Britain revival via social media.

The comedian hosted the BBC Three sketch series from 2003 to 2006 alongside David Walliams, originally launching it as a BBC Radio 4 program.

A recent report published by the Daily Mail suggested the series might be making a comeback, potentially being acquired by a streaming platform instead of returning to the BBC.

However, Lucas denied the allegations, sharing a post on X stating: “I don’t know where this story has come from but there are no plans to reboot this show.”

Little Britain has recently sparked controversy, notably being removed from BBC iPlayer in 2020 due to sketches considered culturally insensitive.

“David and I have both publicly expressed our regret in recent years over playing characters of other races,” Lucas stated at the time. “Once again we want to clarify that it was wrong; we are very sorry.”

The series was subsequently reinstated in 2022 with several edits intended to “better reflect the changes in the cultural landscape over the last 20 years since the show was first made”.

Last week, 11 sketches from That Mitchell & Webb Look were removed from BBC iPlayer when the show was re-added to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with the broadcaster explaining that they “have included the ones that still work today and not the ones that don’t”.

Meanwhile, last year Lucas apologized to Millie Bobby Brown after comparing the Stranger Things actress to his Little Britain character Vicky Pollard, prompted by a photo of her wearing a pink jacket with her hair in a high ponytail.

After Brown criticized the media coverage of her appearance, specifically singling out Lucas, the comedian responded: “Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some context. Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain.

“There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you have blonde hair and a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases”.

He further noted: “I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style, and secondly I think you’re brilliant. I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that I apologise. Matt x.”
