Veteran running back Austin Ekeler is poised to rejoin the Washington Commanders.
Multiple reports on Monday indicate that Ekeler is expected to finalize a deal with the club, contingent on passing a physical. The 29-year-old suffered a torn Achilles while playing for Washington last season but has since been cleared to return; he recently participated in a workout for the Carolina Panthers.
The decision to bring Ekeler back addresses a sudden lack of depth in the Commanders’ backfield. With Jeremy McNichols already on injured reserve and a shoulder injury sidelining a key running back in Sunday’s win, Washington enters the week with only Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Kaytron Allen available as healthy options on the 53-man roster.
Ekeler initially went down in Week 2 of the 2024 campaign. During his limited time with the team last season, he accumulated 77 carries for 367 yards and four touchdowns.
