A couple wearing black masks scaled the spire of New York’s Empire State Building on Wednesday, unfurling a banner with a message promoting peace through love.

The pair, who reached the summit of the 1,454-foot (443 m) skyscraper, displayed a large banner reading: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” After descending to a lower platform, one individual knelt and appeared to propose, presenting a ring before the couple shared a kiss and continued downward.

Authorities confirmed the two individuals were detained by the NYPD and remained atop the building for approximately 10 minutes. Reports suggest the climbers are Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, known for scaling structures globally and featured in the 2024 documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story.

A building spokesperson stated the unauthorized climb posed no risk to visitors or staff. “The Empire State Building Observation Deck remains a safe and memorable venue for proposals,” the statement noted. Charges have not yet been filed by the NYPD.
