Cowboys linebacker and special teamer Marist Liufau suffers broken forearm

Outside linebacker and special teams contributor Marist Liufau exited early from Friday night’s preseason finale with a broken forearm, returning to the hospital in a cast and sling. Medical staff anticipate the need for surgery and expect him to miss several weeks of play.

Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Liufau is projected to miss weeks, while team owner Jerry Jones noted he could return quickly, citing ESPN sources.

“Losing Marist as a football player is challenging,” Schottenheimer commented. “Inevitably, such injuries occur. Everyone respects his dedication to rehabilitation, and we are proceeding urgently with surgical treatment while shifting focus to a substitute. He was truly indispensable—not merely special teams but integral to the overall defense. His physical presence and work ethic elevate players like those around him.”

With Saturday’s final roster cuts approaching, it’s uncertain whether Liufau will remain on the 53-man roster or be placed on injured reserve to begin the season.

Drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Liufau debuted in all 17 games across his initial two campaigns with Dallas. In his last season, he logged 18% of total defensive snap count and 75% involvement in special teams situations.
