Ahead of the IPL 2027 season, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have finalised a four‑player swap that reshapes both squads before the upcoming mini‑auction. England all‑rounder Liam Livingstone and Australian seam‑bowling all‑rounder Jack Edwards are joining CSK, while Indian pace bowler Khaleel Ahmed and Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis will move to SRH.
The trade addresses each team’s immediate needs: CSK bolsters its all‑rounder depth, while SRH reinforces its fast‑bowling unit. For Livingstone, the move offers a chance to resurrect his IPL career following an underwhelming stint with SRH, and Edwards receives a fresh opportunity after missing the last season with a foot injury.
Liam Livingstone, who was signed by SRH for ₹13 crore, will now play for CSK at a reduced remuneration of ₹6 crore. Jack Edwards moves to Chennai at his current contract value of ₹3 crore. Conversely, Khaleel Ahmed returns to SRH for ₹4.8 crore, and Nathan Ellis joins Hyderabad on his existing ₹2 crore contract.
Livingstone and Edwards Bolster CSK’s All‑Rounder Options
Livingstone’s transfer to Chennai follows a lackluster IPL 2026 with SRH, where he managed only two appearances, scoring 15 runs at a strike rate of 60.0, and could not secure a regular spot in the side. The 32‑year‑old will now represent his fifth IPL franchise, having previously played for Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, offering CSK additional middle‑order flexibility with his powerful hitting and off‑spin/leg‑spin bowling.
Jack Edwards arrives on the cusp of an IPL debut, bringing substantial promise after an impressive Big Bash League 2025‑26 season with the Sydney Sixers, where he collected 19 wickets and scored 133 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 168.35. The 25‑year‑old was signed by SRH for IPL 2026 but missed the tournament due to a foot injury, and now joins CSK with the opportunity to showcase his all‑round abilities.
Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis Reinforce SRH’s Fast‑Bowling Attack
The signing of Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis adds valuable depth to SRH’s pace resources. Khaleel rejoins Hyderabad, where he previously fielded for four seasons (2018‑2021) before a stint with CSK.
Khaleel’s first season with Chennai saw him claim 15 wickets in 14 matches, but subsequent campaigns were disrupted by injuries. In IPL 2026 he appeared in only five games, taking two wickets at an economy rate of 8.67 before a right quadriceps injury forced him out of the tournament.
Nathan Ellis also moves to Hyderabad after an injury‑plagued tenure with CSK, where a hamstring problem kept him sidelined for the entire IPL 2026. Known for his white‑ball proficiency, Ellis delivers variations and excels in death‑overs bowling, offering SRH experience in high‑pressure situations.
This swap follows SRH’s earlier trade this year that reacquired left‑arm pacer T. Natarajan from Delhi Capitals, with leg‑spinner Zeeshan Ansari moving to Delhi as part of the agreement.
With the mini‑auction looming, the four‑player exchange enables both CSK and SRH to plug identified gaps without exhausting their auction budgets. The next phase will involve each franchise allocating remaining roster spots and funds to craft competitive squads for IPL 2027.
